Along Minnesota’s scenic North Shore drive you will find Split Rock Lighthouse, located on Lake Superior just north of Two Harbors. This lighthouse sits high on the cliffside, giving it a grand allure. No matter what season it is, this local attraction is worth a visit. But my favorite season to visit this magical place is winter.
Split Rock Lighthouse is open daily from 10 am – 4 pm. Parking and admission are free. Dress warmly as the temperatures are often very cold, even in summer. When we visited in December, it was about 7 degrees but felt like -15! If you decide to go in winter, I recommend buying hand warmers to stick inside your gloves (and socks too). This trick was a life saver for us.
This state park has many trails and spots to take in nature and view the lighthouse. After we parked, we walked through a beautiful trail for a few minutes before we ended up on the rocky shore of Lake Superior. The waves were powerful, and it was incredible to watch them crash against the cliffside. The water immediately turned to ice, creating frozen patterns over the rocks that only mother nature herself could create.
While we were at Split Rock Lighthouse, it began to snow. The way the snow settled on the evergreen branches made my winter wonderland dreams come true. Seeing the lighthouse covered in a blanket of snow was truly special.
Minnesota’s North Shore is truly one of the most beautiful areas I’ve ever been. I recommend a visit, especially if you are a nature enthusiast. Regardless of what season it is, the state parks are never very crowded. For gorgeous scenery, crisp air, expansive lakes, and outdoor activities, you won’t regret visiting “up north.”
