Let’s rock ‘n’ roll! Welcome to Book Club: Daisy Jones & The Six. Written by Taylor Jenkins Reid, this story follows the rise of a fictional rock band in the 1970s Los Angeles music scene. Told in interview format, this novel explores the hidden thoughts and emotions of each band member during their climb to worldwide fame. I read this book in one day as it was an incredibly fun and quick read. Amazon is making a miniseries out of this story, and I cannot wait to watch and put audible melodies to the song lyrics I read in the book. As of now, they have not given an official release date for the show.
Book Synopsis:
Free-spirited Daisy, a teenager of wealthy yet uninvolved parents, parties nightly on the Sunset Strip. With no supervision, her typical day is filled with sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll. During this time period, Daisy develops a love for music and meets her best friend, Simone Jackson. Simone encourages Daisy to pursue a career as a singer/songwriter, and it isn’t long before Daisy is discovered and signed to a record deal.
Meanwhile, brothers Billy and Graham Dunne form a band with some friends and call themselves The Six. The Six travel to Los Angeles to play their music and are promptly discovered and signed to a recording contract. After their first album, their manager suggests they add a female vocalist to their band. Daisy Jones joins the band, and the band name officially changes to Daisy Jones & The Six. Daisy and Billy constantly bicker over the artistic direction of the music and lyrics, yet deep down there seems to be an unspoken attraction between them. This attraction is made more complicated since Billy is married with kids. Through many highs and lows, the band navigates a life of worldwide tours, complicated relationship dynamics, drug abuse, rehab, fame, and (lost) love. And of course, music. So much music.
Packed with humor, this book isn’t your typical, cliché story about hippie musicians. It has depth, heart, and soul. Plus the ending has a pretty big twist. Whether you’re a music lover or just love a good story, I recommend Daisy Jones & The Six.
