With over 1,200 acres overlooking downtown San Diego, Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the United States. As soon as we entered the park, it felt like we were transported straight to Spain. Because of the many attractions, gift shops, restaurants, and gorgeous architecture, Balboa Park is definitely worth a visit. Entrance is free, but some of the museums may require tickets.
Since we arrived just before sunset, many of the museums and shops were closed. However, we still had so much fun walking the grounds and admiring the lush gardens, Talavera tile, and vibrant bougainvillea. We ended up grabbing dinner at The Prado (which I highly recommend). Not only was the food delicious, but the scenery was breathtaking. We sat outside on the back patio and were surrounded by bubbling fountains and epic vistas. We truly felt like we were on a European holiday. It would even be a gorgeous wedding spot.
The Spanish Village Art Center is the place in my photos with the colorful tile. It felt surreal to walk around this area. There were numerous gift shops and art galleries to browse around. Since all the shops were closed by the time we arrived, I hope to go back at some point and purchase that ‘special piece’ for our home. It is so important to support your local artists.
Until next time, San Diego.
